The functions of the kidneys
The kidneys play a vital role in removing waste products from the body and maintaining the balance of fluids and electrolytes.
When kidney function is impaired, toxins and waste can accumulate in the blood, negatively impacting the entire body.
Additionally, improper fluid excretion can lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or face, as well as urinary problems and feelings of fatigue.
Kidney issues are also closely linked to cardiovascular diseases, increasing the risk of complications, and can cause problems with bone health due to imbalances in calcium and phosphorus levels.
Pain points of patients with renal disease
Among patients with end-stage renal disease, 80% undergo hemodialysis, 16% receive kidney transplants, and 4% opt for peritoneal dialysis.
Patients undergoing hemodialysis typically spend 4 hours per session, 3 times a week, amounting to 156 days per year. They also face the inconvenience of strictly regulating their diet and fluid intake as part of the treatment.
However, current hemodialysis technology, established in the 1960s, has limitations, including insufficient filtration efficiency, excessive loss of essential substances, and slower filtration speeds.
To address these issues, INOSEP is developing an advanced artificial kidney device based on its core technology of adjusting membrane pore sizes. This innovation effectively removes waste and toxins while minimizing the loss of essential substances and improving filtration speed.
The importance of membrane technology
Membrane technology is important in hemodialysis. The main function of the kidneys is to filter out waste products and at the same time purify the blood so that essential substances needed by our body do not leak out. To implement this, the pore size and density of the membrane, the structure of the membrane, etc. must be well designed. INOSEP has the technology to control the pore size of the membrane. Additionally, there is technology available to manufacture a separation membrane that better filters mid-molecular weight uremic substances and reduces the loss of albumin, an essential protein in the blood. INOSEP has advanced blood filtration technology to realize a glomerular nanostructure and developed a dialysate reuse system to realize tubular function.
